BoardProfiler 3D-T – Measurements of the true shape of boards in transversal lines

The BoardProfiler 3D-T provides very high density board scanning on transverse conveyors for grading, sorting or optimization of the saw process. This high definition scanning ensures that the true shape is accurately captured and means that the best possible yield can be achieved. The system uses the latest high resolution 2D laser technology developed by LIMAB which scans every millimeter of the board. The system can easily be retrofitted on an existing line or can be specified for equipping a new process line.

Operating Principle
The boards are scanned using a selectable number of LIMAB ProfiCura 2D 600 sensors using a technique known as laser triangulation. The ProfiCura 2D sensors are mounted every 600 mm on to a mechanical frame and capture a complete cross section every millimeter along the board length. The scanning process enables the computer to generate a very detailed 3D model of each board. The BoardProfiler 3D-T can also combine the integration of ProfiCura 2D sensors with the LIMAB single point PreciCura sensors.

BoardProfiler 3D-TT – Optimization for trimmers
The high measurement resolution of the ProfiCura 600 sensors ensures that every mm of the board is scanned even on high speed lines. By detecting the precise 3D model of each board, the BoardProfiler3D-TT will calculate the best trimming position based on your rule tables. This ensures the best possible trimming and will maximize your production yield whilst maintaining the best quality products for your customers.

BoardProfiler 3D-TD – Dimensional sorting
The overall dimensions of the finished board are scanned with a high scan resolution to find spots and parts of the board that is out of tolerance. The data is evaluated by the BoardProfiler 3D-TD to accurately determine the overall dimension and quality grading for sorting and classification.

The BoardProfiler interface includes a 3D presentation of the board that shows where the defects such as out of tolerance, cracks and holes are located. Dimensional statistics are produced which are available for quality assurance or post-process analysis purposes.

BoardProfiler 3D-TE/TR/TC – Edger system, Rip-Saw and Cross-Cut saw optimization
Edger, Rip-Saw and Cross-Cut optimizations for transversal production lines are made exactly in the same way as with our lineal systems. The difference is that we measure the board in the transversal process before the boards enters the lineal process, where it will be fixed and oriented correctly before it is processed through the saw blades/cutter.

ProfiCura 2D technology
The BoardProfiler 3D-T uses LIMAB’s ProfiCura 2D laser triangulation sensors, which are a product of 30 years’ experience of producing precision laser sensors. The sensors are very accurate and stable, yet suitable for use in tough sawmill environment.

Non-contact measurement
The measurements are done 100% non-contact. This is possible by using the LIMAB laser sensors. This means that the BoardProfiler 3D-T can operate on the fastest conveyors and still provide reliable results. 

Automated inspection
The BoardProfiler 3D-T will accurately determine the shape characteristics of each board and calculate a cutting proposal based on the customers quality grades. Automating the sawing or trimming operation will reduce the manual work and increase the yield. 

Automated sorting
The width, thickness and length of each board is measured and compared with pre-determined quality grades and provides signals to the drop sorter for automatic sorting of the timber in to the correct bins. 

Optimized system concept
The BoardProfiler 3D-T is a modular system, which makes it possible to design an optimum measurement concept for each saw line. The system can be equipped only with ProfiCura 2D sensors, which will ensure a complete board scanning. If this is not needed, the BoardProfiler 3D-T can also integrate a mix of ProfiCura 2D and single point PreciCura sensors.

Integration with existing sawmill equipment
LIMAB’s long experience in supplying the sawmill industry means that the equipment can be easily be retrofitted to existing lines or fully integrated to new ones. Interfaces available to most of today’s OEM sawmill equipment suppliers.
